Clean-up initiative in Broadacres

BROADACRES – Following reports of excessive dumping in Broadacres, community members, together with Pikitup, Metro police and other stakeholder, took to the streets to get the area back to its former glory.

The clean-up follows a complaint from Janine Sanders, a resident who recently contacted Fourways Review to vent her frustration and said, “It was an absolute pleasure to get home from work… and see the clean pavements.”

According to Ward 96 councilor Matome Mafokwane, the clean-up was targeted at three intersections — the corner of Valley and Cedar roads, Frederick and Cedar roads and Cedar and Lombardy roads.

Mafokwane added that besides cleaning the area up, the day was aimed at engaging with the community, particularly taxi drivers and vendors in the area.

Mafokwane said, “The idea was to engage with taxi associations, as without them you cannot have movement.”

On the issue of informal vendors, Mafokwane encouraged vendors to apply for permits to ensure their safety and legal right to distribute goods in the area.

“Currently many vendors are at risk of being run over by vehicles, so applying for permits will ensure that they are placed in safe zones,” said Mafokwane.

He added that more dustbins would be added once roadworks in the area were completed as it was difficult to assess how many more dustbins were needed.

Mafokwane thanked everybody who was involved in the clean-up. “All who protect our surroundings serve a greater purpose for the future of our environment.”
