Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communication for the Douglasdale Police Station, has issued a warning to motorists who intentionally make false statements under oath.
Muthan said there had been an increase in false cases reported to the police, particularly motorists who claimed theft out of vehicles and theft of motor vehicles. He added that complainants would be asked to physically point out the crime scene as part of the investigation, as well as bring in their cars if reporting a theft out of motor vehicle case.
Muthan said many shopping centre parking lots were equipped with CCTV cameras and anti-car jamming devices that police could utilise to confirm the crime.
Graham Craggs, spokesperson for Budget Insurance said, “While we are unfortunately not able to provide statistics, we can say that insurance fraud costs the industry millions of rand every year which negatively impacts the consumer.” He urged readers to report insurance fraud or inappropriate claims behaviour.
Muthan said complainants found making false statements would be charged with perjury.
