Retirement village launches campaign for the elderly
BROADACRES - The elderly are encouraged to participate in societal activities.
Go turquoise for the Elderly, an awareness campaign run by Evergreen Broadacres Retirement Village is encouraging the Fourways community to embrace the elderly in Fourways, as well as to get the elderly to become involved in societal activities.
Starajean Artman, spokesperson for the retirement village, said the purpose of the campaign, which will run until 15 June, was to sensitise the community about the needs of the older people in the local community.
“The aim of the campaign is to make people more aware of the older persons in their own community – addressing physical health, mental health and social well-being; and to provide vital information that impacts the needs of the elderly,” said Artman.
“The campaign started on 15 May, which is International Family Day, and ends on 15 June, which is World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day. Both these dates have significance for the elderly.”
The retirement village was abuzz with activity when the campaign was launched on 15 May and was attended by residents of the village, family members and well-wishers. To spice up the environment, trees and lampposts in the area were decorated with turquoise fabric and attendees were encouraged to wear turquoise ribbons.
Turquoise was selected as the awareness colour as it gives a feeling of calmness, peacefulness, brotherhood, meditation, love and healing. “Therefore, it is the ideal colour for a campaign for the elderly. We hope that all older persons, regardless of where they live, will benefit from the increased awareness,” said Artman.
She said the retirement village was equipped with supporting facilities needed by active ageing citizens, which optimise opportunities for health, participation and security. “It allows people to realise their potential for physical, social and mental well-being; it encourages people to participate in society according to their needs, desires and capacities whilst providing adequate protection, security and care when assistance is required.”
