Accident involving a taxi leaves 23 people injured and five critical
NOOITGEDACHT – Reports allege that the collision occurred after a bakkie performed an illegal U-turn.
On the evening of 6 November, various emergency services responded to reports of a serious collision on the R114 Road closest to corner Cedar Road in Nooitgedacht.
Upon arrival the paramedics found a bakkie had collided with a taxi head-on. It was alleged that the collision occurred after a bakkie performed an illegal U-turn.
According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Max Cohen, the paramedics immediately began triaging the patients and found that a total of 23 people had been injured in the crash. “The driver of the bakkie was in a very critical condition – having sustained a severe head injury. Four other patients, including a seven-month pregnant woman, sustained serious injuries. The remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries,” Cohen explained.
He added that the critically injured driver was stabilised by Advanced Life Support paramedics. “The patient was intubated and put on a ventilator while the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter was called to the scene.”
Cohen further explained that four seriously injured patients also required Advanced Life Support intervention and were treated on the scene, alongside 18 other patients, before being transported to various nearby hospitals in the area for further care.
“Once stabilised the critically injured driver was transported by ambulance to a nearby field, where the Netcare911 Helicopter had landed. The patient was assessed by the HEMS trauma team, before being airlifted to a Johannesburg Level 1 Trauma centre for urgent specialist care,” Cohen concluded.
Metro police were also on the scene to investigate the exact events leading up to the collision.
