Councillor calls for crackdown in Sunninghill business district to curb reports of crime and disorder
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy has called for a more consistent law enforcement presence along Leeuwkop Road, citing residents and visitors are increasingly concerned about crime.
Residents, businesses, and commuters using Leeuwkop Road in Sunninghill are being urged to report incidents of crime and disorder, as calls grow for increased policing in the area.
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy has appealed to the City of Johannesburg to deploy a consistent presence from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), saying the stretch of road near Chilli on Top and Builders Warehouse has become a hotspot for a range of activities that are making residents feel unsafe.

According to Reddy, the area is frequented by informal traders, job seekers, delivery vehicle drivers waiting for work, and people gambling in public.
While acknowledging that many people use the space to earn an honest living, he said residents have also reported criminal and anti-social behaviour.
He said residents, particularly those living at the nearby Chianti Lifestyle Estate, have complained of harassment, with women allegedly experiencing catcalling while pedestrians have reported incidents of pickpocketing.
“The area is relatively unsafe for pedestrians. Later in the afternoon, there is often public drinking, which leads to intoxication and creates an environment where people feel uncomfortable.”

Reddy added that previous law enforcement operations in the area had produced positive results, but said these interventions were not frequent enough. “We need a far more consistent and regular JMPD presence.”
He added that support from the South African Police Service (SAPS) would also be beneficial, given reports of suspected illegal alcohol sales, drug dealing, and other illicit activities.
He also raised concerns about motorists parking illegally on traffic islands and pavements, saying the behaviour contributes to congestion and creates hazards for pedestrians.
Reddy believes improving safety along Leeuwkop Road is vital, as it serves as Sunninghill’s primary business district. “We want people to enjoy entertainment venues like Chilli on Top, shop at the nearby centres in peace, and feel safe using public transport.
“Many residents who live further up the road rely on this route every day, so it is important that it is safe and welcoming for everyone.”
Reddy has called on city authorities to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure regular patrols and sustained enforcement in the area.
The City of Johannesburg, as well as metro police, were contacted for comment on July 7. An update will be provided once received.
