The Douglasdale police in a joint operation with the Johannesburg West Cluster arrested 11 suspects in their festive season operations on 11 November.
Douglasdale Police Station’s communications officer, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said, “The operation which was led by the cluster commander Major General Pharasi, focused on Florida and Roodepoort policing areas to address illegal mining, drugs and gangsterism.”
In Roodepoort, the arrests included two suspects detained for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, two for housebreaking and theft, one for selling liquor without a licence, one illegal immigrant, one for possession of suspected stolen goods and one for possession of dagga.
Tshetlhane said police also recovered a shotgun with a live round, a pistol, 36g of dagga, and liquor. Illegal mining implements were also confiscated including a 20-litre bucket of gold concentrate, six 19kg gas cylinders, a 9kg gas cylinder and a cutting torch.
“In Florida, two suspects aged 44 and 35 were arrested in Jerusalem informal settlement for possession of an unlicensed firearm, as one of the suspects is wanted for murder,” Tshetlhane said.
Also in Florida, a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off and a toy gun were confiscated.
“The arrested suspects will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.”
