The year 2017 was no stranger to crime. Johannesburg North witnessed some weird criminal activities along with the common crimes. These are some of the most memorable stories and videos:
Eight suspects allegedly involved in a syndicate targeting upmarket areas arrested
Members of a provincial task team and ZSS Security were applauded for successfully arresting six suspects after a robbery at a house in Bedfordview and another two suspects who were apprehended in Kelvin. The police are investigating allegations that members of a gang are targeting upmarket suburbs, including Sandton.
Uber vehicles petrol-bombed outside Sandton Gautrain Station
Several Uber vehicles were targeted outside Sandton Gautrain Station and in September two Ubers were set alight. Rumours that meter taxi drivers were responsible for the petrol-bombing of Uber vehicles are being investigated.
Hijacker bites woman’s fingers
Two women were hijacked and robbed of their possessions outside a complex in Bryanston on 31 August. Janet Isaac, who was driving a Range Rover, said, “The guard was taking some time to open the gate and men armed with guns tried to force us out of the car. They robbed us of everything. There were four men in the car but only two got out. I would guess they stole possessions worth R200 000.”
