#ICYMI: Smile Foundation receives best gift of all
MIDRAND – Read how much money the Smile Foundation recently received.
The Smile Foundation received a cheque for R102 556 from The Mall of Africa, who raised the money through its festive season gift-wrapping stations.
“Once the customers purchased their presents, they took them to the gift-wrapping stations for a normal fee. What’s more, all the proceeds from the wrapping stations were pledged to the Smile Foundation,” said Johann Fourie, general manager of the Mall of Africa.
He explained that they were overwhelmed by the support of their generous shoppers for the worthy cause and they will aim to raise the bar this festive season.
“The money raised will be allocated to the weekly theatre slate, which will take place at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. “Every Wednesday, children undergo facial reconstructive surgery to alleviate the backlog within the Medunsa area, and these funds will be utilised to fund this surgery,” Fourie said.
The Smile Foundation is a non-profit organisation that assists children with any type of facial abnormality, to receive free corrective plastic and reconstructive surgery within South Africa.
They help children who suffer from treatable facial deformities such as cleft palates and lips, burn victims, Moebius syndrome (facial paralysis) and other conditions. They are currently based in seven academic hospitals around the country.
The Smile Foundation’s chief executive officer, Hedley Lewis said, “We were simply overjoyed with the outcome of this first collaboration. The festive season was such a busy time of the year, and we are so grateful that so many people took the time to give that little bit extra, which helps us give these children the best gift of all – a beautiful smile.”
