#WorldOceansDay: ‘Joburgers’ can still do their part to protect the ocean [VIDEOS]
JOBURG – Businessman Richard Branson is among the many people who have made a pledge to do their part in protecting our oceans.
Today, 8 June, is #WorldOceansDay and although we are situated quite far from any coastline, we can still do our part to protect the ocean all the way from our concrete jungle of Joburg.
One of the ways in which we can do so is by reducing the amount of plastic we use. Single-use plastic straws, bottles, and bags can be replaced with long-term products that can be kept and used regularly. Check out an infographic further below to see more.

Plastic is very difficult to avoid as it has become much of a convenience in modern-day times. However, most single-use plastic items are unnecessary and can be replaced in order to make a difference in protecting our environment, including the ocean.
Here are 9 ways you can reduce your use of plastic:

According to an article by the BBC, 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic has been produced to date, generating 6.3 billion metric tons of waste, only 9 per cent of which has been recycled. Unfortunately, due to poor waste management, a huge portion of discarded plastic reaches our world’s oceans causing massive destruction to marine life.
So let’s band together and make an effort to reduce waste. Maybe we’ll be able to save and watch sea animals as happy as this one for years to come if we really try:
Looks like someone has already started celebrating #WorldOceansDay. Then again, we'd be doing backflips too, if we lived at Ningaloo Reef! 💦 Video: alexkyddphoto/IG pic.twitter.com/wVvY19gLjg
