Update: Fire rips through Clay Oven Informal Settlement

PAULSHOF – It is estimated that between 80 and 100 dwellings have been destroyed.

Smoke hangs over the Clay Oven Informal Settlement this morning, 1 September, after a fire ripped through the settlement destroying about 80 to 100 of the informal dwellings.

This is according to the Douglasdale Sector 4 Facebook page, which also said that emergency services were on scene.

Gracepoint Church, based in Glenferness, also took to its Facebook page and said the settlement was ‘burnt down almost entirely’.

“One person was tragically burnt to death, a few people who were badly injured by the fire, were rushed to Helen Joseph Hospital,” read the post.

“We kindly request, some food items, especially dry groceries, tinned food. Also clothes and blankets to be dropped off at Gracepoint. There will be someone waiting to receive the donations, people are left homeless, with no clothes and food. The community has a total of 20 children and almost 150 people were left homeless. Lets give generously and sacrificially towards this tragedy.”

Douglasdale Sector 4 is calling for donations to be dropped off at the Lonehill Fire Station.
