Fire rips through Leeuwkop veld
LEEUWKOP – Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe reported seeing some of the prison workers dousing the flames.
A veld fire broke out this afternoon, 4 September, burning the grass at Leeuwkop Prison.
Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe, called the Fourways Review from the Leeuwkop Golf Course and reported she could see some prison workers attempting to douse the flames.
At around 6pm, Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Nana Radebe, reported that the fire was still burning but was under control and a fire truck was on the scene.
She said no injuries had been reported as yet and the did not know what had caused the fire to start.
However, Deppe believed that the fire appeared to have started near the banks of the Jukskei River and spread to the golf course and prison.
Deppe said she could see about five people from the prison trying to put out the flames and was concerned that they were not wearing protective clothing.
The Fourways Review is in the process of getting comment from the prison and will update as soon as more information is received.
Deppe was also not aware of any injuries.
The Paulshof and Sunninghill area has been rocked by veld fires recently. Last Friday night, a fire ripped through the Clay Oven informal settlement. Just a week before that, multiple units burned down in a Sunninghill complex. A veld fire also burnt the open grass area in Sunninghill earlier in August.
