Prominent people share their heritage message

FOURWAYS – Here's what leaders in the community had to say about Heritage Day.

In light of Heritage Day, this is what prominent people in the community had to say about the much celebrated holiday:

Chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, Jean Berdou.

Future City Fourways‘ Jean Berdou said the day had huge relevance as it played a vital role for people to remember the foundation that had been laid for future generations. Berdou added that the strength of a house was the quality if its foundation hence it was important to embrace each other and our differences.

He said he had enjoyed the day with family, friends and the community.

Ward 115 councillor, Matome Mafokwane.

Ward 115 councillor Matome Mafokwane said, “Heritage is about types of building foundations left behind by those who came before us. It’s time to reflect on who we are, where we are and where we wish to go, without forgetting how we got here… through the years I was constantly reminded to explore others’ cultures and ways of living, to teach and be taught by others, accept others and learn tolerance and embrace diversity and different viewpoints, but most importantly coexist in this cosmopolitan jungle called the world.”

Ward 96 councillor, Sbusiso Mthembu.

Ward 96 councillor, Sbusiso Mthembu said Heritage Day meant diverse races, and people of different religions and beliefs were encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions in a country that belongs to all its people. “This day has the potential of uniting different races and cultural diversity,” he added.

Gekco chairperson Kristin Kallesen

Gekco’s Kristen Kallesen said Heritage Day was about celebrating the unique and colourful heritage of the country’s people and what brought the country together as South Africans – beauty and strength in diversity. “I spent my Heritage Day outdoors, enjoying nature in the beautiful Kyalami area,” she said.
