Help Pets settle vet bills
The organisation's vet account has skyrocketed to R94 251 and they have had to suspend all veterinary care and sterilisations for animals in the township until they can settle the account.
Pet Empowerment in the Townships (Pets) is a non-profit, proactive and pro-life animal rescue organisation that needs your help to keep caring for animals in need.
Due to a high number of animals who have needed veterinary treatment recently, the registered public benefit organisation now owes their vet nearly R95 000 despite receiving welfare rates.
“Last week we had 15 animals at our vet receiving treatment,” explained Nicole Badenhorst of Pets.
“The cases we had consisted of four parvo cases, two biliary cases, a dog with an obstruction in his intestines which meant he required surgery and a greyhound named Glen that was severely injured after being used for hunting. [Glen’s] wounds have required long-term treatment over a course of a month, as well as skin grafts. There were also two TVT cases [transmissible venereal tumour, or cancer cases] requiring four sessions of chemo each. Five sterilisations were also conducted.”

The organisation’s vet account has skyrocketed to R94 251 and they have had to suspend all veterinary care and sterilisations for animals in the township until they can settle the account.
“This is a project that is operated from home, in our spare time, with all of the members working full time at our respective places of work. The funding we are currently receiving (donations) is not nearly enough to cover the costs of all the work we would wish to accomplish. Pets is run by volunteers in their spare time, outside of full-time jobs,” Badenhorst added.
You can assist Pets by making a donation so they can continue to provide veterinary care to township animals. Please email jhb@pets.org.za for more information.
