Crime fighters in Diepsloot had a busy day on 24 October – not only did the MEC visit the area but four arrests were also made in relation to non-compliant, second-hand stores in the informal settlement.
South African Police Service members in Diepsloot, in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and the Gauteng Traffic Police, tightened the screws on non-compliant, second-hand stores in the area.
During the operation, three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and a fourth suspect was arrested for fraud.
All suspects will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon, according to the release issued by Captain Tinyiko Mathebula of the Diepsloot Police Station to the press.
Second-hand items such as laptops, cell phones and TV screens were also confiscated at five illegal second-hand shops during the operation.
On the same day, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, the MEC for Community Safety, was also present at the informal settlement as part of a safety outreach programme in the area, where she commended the officers involved for their excellent work to make sure of compliance with trading regulations.
During her visit, Nkosi-Malobane, along with the deputy cluster commander for Joburg West Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, as well as Diepsloot Police Station commander Brigadier Koena Moichela met with and greeted participants involved in the Sports Against Crime Tournament, which was hosted at the Diepsloot Safe Hub Ext 2.
