Man gets 12 years for Fourways robbery

DOUGLASDALE – A suspect arrested by Douglasdale police for robbery has received a lengthy sentence from the Randburg Magistrate's Court.

A suspect arrested by Douglasdale police has been sentenced to jail time for a robbery he participated in in 2018.

Lesotho citizen Mokhehle Mokoaleli (55) was sentenced by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court recently to an effective 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three years for discharging a firearm in a built-up area and two years for contravention of the Immigration Act. The sentences will run concurrently.

Mokoaleli was sentenced after an incident on 10 August 2018 when he and a friend contacted a taxi service to transport them from a shopping centre in the Sandton area to a cocktail lounge in the Fourways area.

When the men arrived at the second location and were meant to pay their fare they instead pointed a firearm at the driver, dragged him out of his vehicle, shot him in the lower part of his body and fled the scene with his vehicle.

The security guards at the location reacted to the incident at which point a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and the guards.

Douglasdale police officers, together with officer from Gauteng Traffic Police and Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers gave chase.

When the suspects reached the Katlehong area, they continued shooting at the police.

One suspect fled the scene while police managed to corner Mokoaleli, who was the driver of the hijacked vehicle, and an unlicensed firearm and one empty magazine were also recovered from the scene. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and will be deported back to his country immediately after serving his sentence.

The sentence given to the accused is an indication that the police will leave no stone unturned to eradicate criminal activities in the Douglasdale policing area.

“We applaud the hard work and determination shown by the investigating officer, Sergeant Morwamocha Maloka,” commented Brigadier Veeshani Arikum, who is the commander of the Douglasdale Police Station.
