Auto and General ensures Diepsloot residents have continued access to fresh produce
DIEPSLOOT – Auto and General Insurance has ensured that its neighbouring community of Diepsloot will receive immune boosting, fresh produce during lockdown.
The Auto and General Food Security Programme has ensured that Diepsloot residents have access to fresh produce during the lockdown.
The programme was launched in 2014 and there are now 18 vegetable gardens and two seedling nurseries.
For almost four years, nutririous meals have been provided to over 1 145 children a day and also benefitting 2 230 residents in Diepsloot.
Ricardo Coetzee from Auto and General Insurance said it was important the community get the nutrition they need to have good defences in a strong immune system to fight against Covid-19. “Previously, produce was distributed through the 15 crèches in the programme but with schools being closed, we had to find a way to get more produce out to the community.”
With additional support from Auto and General Insurance, the programme has increased its seedling production in Diepsloot and has implemented a new distribution plan to ensure healthy food is available for its beneficiaries as well as the wider community.
Operations manager at the Auto and General Diepsloot Food Security Programme, Precious Ngoepe said, “When the produce is available, residents are notified to collect their vegetables from outside the crèches.”
She added, “We have put various measures in place to ensure that social distancing and strict hygiene protocols are also observed.”
Coetzee concluded, “This is another way we are saying Thuma Mina.”
