Confusion regarding the return of Grade 7 and matric learners

FOURWAYS – Schools across the Fourways area have taken different decisions regarding the return of learners.

There has been a large amount of confusion at local public and private schools regarding the scheduled return of Grade 7 and matric learners on 1 June.

The Department of Basic Education released a statement late on 31 May, stating that Grade 7 and 12 learners will no longer return to school on 1 June. A decision was taken that learners will only return to school on 8 June, since many schools were not prepared to resume teaching.

The Fourways Review spoke to a number of local schools in our area to find out when their learners would return to school.

Head of marketing at Crawford Lonehill Robyn Swanepoel said that matric learners had returned to school on 1 June.

Marketing and admissions manager at Beaulieu College Lynette Gray also confirmed that matric learners returned to school on 1 June.

St Peter’s College took the decision to delay the return of learners. Marketing manager Nosipho Nkosi said that the school is awaiting news from the Minister of Basic Education today before announcing the return of learners.

Public school Fourways High’s marketing manager Jodi Selesnick said that Grade 12 learners were scheduled to return to school on 1 June, but this has been delayed until 8 June.

The Minister of Basic Education is expected to brief media on 1 June at 11am to clarify the confusion and map a way forward.
