Young learners prepare to take on a chilly challenge
NIETGEDACHT – Community members are urged to donate and contribute to supply pre-schoolers with a healthy meal every day for an entire year.
Community members are urged to support the annual HeronBridge Polar Bear Swim Challenge in aid of Rise Against Hunger.
The funds raised will be used to assist the Rise Against Hunger food assistance programme. Outreach administrator at HeronBridge College Suzanne Paidas said, “We, as a community, assist with providing one healthy meal to 700 pre-schoolers in the ECD centres we partner with in Diepsloot, Lanseria and Cosmo City on a daily basis. This is a significant and wonderful programme which enables our students to engage with the community and fill a massive need in an ongoing and sustainable way.”
This year’s Polar Bear Swim will look somewhat different in light of Covid-19.
Learners have been invited to participate in either the #FunkyTown or #ClothesSwap TikTok Challenge by uploading a video of their chosen challenge on Google
Forms, which is then shared via the @heronbridgecollege_highschool Instagram page. As an added incentive, participants stand a chance to win a R500 weekly prize in the lead up to the Polar Bear Swim.
The video with the most likes wins. Included on the Google Forms will be a link to the Rise Against Hunger website where a donation can be made towards the fundraiser.
On 26 June, high school learners will sign onto a group Google Meet where staff and learners will be encouraged to jump into their pool or take on the ice-bucket challenge at the same time.
Paidas said that each year, HeronBridge aims to raise R140 000 through fundraising initiatives. So far, the school has raised half this amount, with many fundraisers being postponed due to the challenges associated with Covid-19.
“We, therefore, hope to raise as much as possible to meet the shortfall amount,” said Paidas.
Community members are encouraged to make donations, however big or small on www.rahafrica.org/campaigns/rah-donations, using HeronBridge as a reference. “All funds will go towards the boxes of meals we supply on a monthly basis to our partnership schools and will provide 700 pre-schoolers with a healthy meals every day for an entire year,” concluded Paidas.
