Covid-19: Case numbers breach the 200 000 mark

A further 111 people succumbed to the virus on 6 July.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize reported on 6 July that cases of Covid-19 breached the 200 000 mark with a cumulative total of 205 721 confirmed cases.

The Western Cape still leads with 70 938 cases on 6 July, closely followed by Gauteng with 66 891 and the Eastern Cape with 38 081.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded a total of 15 819 cases, while North West recorded 6 410, Free State with 2 804, Mpumalanga with 2 173, Limpopo with 1 785 and the Northern Cape with 820.

Mkhize said that 1 864 111 tests have been conducted to date with 33 950 new tests reported. The private sector still leads with 994 549 tests, followed by the public sector with 869 562 tests.

A further 111 people succumbed to the virus on 6 July. Gauteng reported 50 deaths, the Western Cape recorded 35, Limpopo with 17 and the Eastern Cape with nine.

The total number of recoveries to date is 97 848.

Mkhize also reported, with great sadness, the passing of the MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in North West, Gordon Kegakilwe, who succumbed to the virus after a short battle with pneumonia.

“He was a tried and tested leader with an illustrious political career that led to his occupancy of this key position in provincial leadership. It is crushing to lose such a talent in the prime of his life,” said Mkhize.
