ICYMI: Fourways High learners take on a challenge

FOURWAYS – The Student Development Programme currently assists 12 families at the school.

Fourways High School learners took part in a Lockdown Challenge, raising awareness and donations for the school’s Student Development Programme (SDP) and feeding scheme.

Over 20 sporting, cultural and service codes at the school videoed themselves completing sit-ups, squats, push-ups and other difficult exercises as part of the challenge.

Teacher-in-charge of learner leadership, who oversaw the project, Janet Borrill-Fombe said, “The aim was to engage all sporting, cultural and service codes in an activity over the lockdown period while being able to make a valuable contribution to the Fourways High School family.”

The SDP has been around for 15 years and aims to support learners with socio-economic challenges within the school environment. The Lockdown Challenge is one of many initiatives at the school for learners in need. Through these drives, the SDP receives donations of money, food, uniforms, books and sports equipment.

Partners including Hot Cares, Pick ‘n Pay Douglasdale and Daily Bread Org have also contributed to the drive. As Covid-19 hits the country, the need at the school increases.”With misconceptions about the Fourways area being a middle to upper class suburb without any major financial challenges, it is not always easy to get financial assistance. As a school, we recognise the struggles facing some of our families in the community that are in desperate need of assistance,” said Borrill-Fombe.

The programme is not only focused on the feeding scheme but rather on identifying learners in need and working closely with school teams to ensure that learners have access to learning materials, sports equipment and uniform.

Fourways community members are urged to assist the programme by placing their slips at Pick ‘n Pay Douglasdale into two marked boxes.A percentage of those sales will be donated to the SDP.Financial contributions for the project are also welcome.
