ICYMI: Crime stats for Douglasdale and Diepsloot paint a bleak picture

DOUGLASDALE – Both police stations saw an increase in contact crimes and a decrease in crimes detected as a result of police action.

Recently-released crime statistics revealed an increase in contact crimes in both the Diepsloot and Douglasdale policing areas over the 2019/2020 year, painting a bleak picture for local residents.

Police Minister General Bheki Cele announced the annual crime statistics during a media briefing on 31 July.

Douglasdale:

Douglasdale Police Station recorded an increase of 12.3 per cent in contact crimes. This includes a 12 per cent increase in murders, an 85 per cent increase in attempted murder, an increase of 6.8 per cent in common assaults, a 22.4 per cent increase in common robberies and a 27.5 per cent increase in common robberies with aggravating circumstances.

However, the station reported a decrease in sexual offences by 16.7 per cent with a reduction in reported rape incidents by 14.5 per cent and 37.5 per cent reduction in sexual assault.

Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased by 5.8 per cent to 245 incidents.

Carjacking incidents increased drastically by 128.2 per cent from 39 to 89 incidents.

Robberies at residential premises increased by 41.5 per cent, while those at non-residential premises decreased by 13.2 per cent.

Burglaries at residential and non-residential premises decreased by 12.7 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively.

Theft of motor vehicles or motorcycles decreased by 6.1 per cent while theft out of motor vehicle increased by 23.7 per cent, recording 688 incidents in the 2019/2020 year.

Commercial crimes also increased by 31.3 per cent from 531 to 697 incidents, while shoplifting decreased by 3.8 per cent.

Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased by 17.8 per cent.

Diepsloot:

Diepsloot Police Station failed to paint a brighter picture with a 5.7 per cent increase in contact crimes.

The policing precinct saw a 58.1 per cent increase in murder incidents from 62 to 98 incidents.

Sexual offences saw an 11.9 per cent increase from 177 to 198 incidents. Reported rape incidents increased by 6.2 per cent.

Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm increased by 6.9 per cent from 722 to 825 cases.

Common assault also increased by 9.5 per cent, while common robberies and robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 14 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively.

Carjacking incidents reduced by 14.9 per cent and robberies at residential premises also decreased by 9.4 per cent.

Robberies at non-residential premises increased by 16.9 per cent and malicious damage to property incidents increased by 11 per cent from 245 to 272 incidents.

Burglaries at residential and non-residential premises saw an increase, while theft of motor vehicles/ motorcycles and theft out of motor vehicles decreased by 11.4 per cent and 25.7 per cent respectively.

Commercial crimes decreased by 5.1 per cent and shoplifting also decreased by 5.4 per cent.

Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased by 56.8 per cent in the 2019/2020 year.
