Residents show appreciation for Lonehill security guards

LONEHILL – Members in the Lonehill community alongside the Lonehill Residents Association did their bit to give thanks to those keeping their areas safe at night.

Street patrollers on the night shift are being given a warm dose of appreciation by the Lonehill community in the form of donated cup-a-soup boxes since the start of the winter months.

Members of the Lonehill community have come out in their numbers to support the Community Security Initiative which aims to give something back to the patrollers for their hard work in keeping the community safe.Pick n Pay Lonehill and the Engen Lonehill Convenience Centre are drop-off zones and there had been an outstanding number of donations.

Marketing and communications manager at Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) Shelley Miller said, “The support for this initiative has been huge that we have been able to hand out soup to the security officers twice during their shifts, day and night.

“We have had massive support for this drive and never ever run short.”Our community wanted to give something back to say thanks to the street patrollers. It is very cold out there during winter, so we like to warm their souls with a cup of hot soup.”

Miller added that the Lonehill community had been a generous one, with many residents contributing in sandwich making and donating groceries, not only for their community but also for the Diepsloot community and churches.Residents pledge the groceries online which are then picked up by pastors of the churches. Volunteers then help package the food parcels and they are donated to 100 families in need.

“They [community] have been beyond generous with donations to help those in need. We at the LRA are incredibly proud of our community and cannot thank them enough. We even had a family prepare sandwiches for more than 40 security officers who make up our community security team every Sunday for the month of June.”
