Donations help rebuild destroyed Diepsloot homes

DIEPSLOOT – Seven families whose homes were destroyed during a shack fire on 24 July were given a number of donations to help them rebuild their homes and restore their dignity.

Seven Diepsloot families, who were devastated by a shack fire on 24 July, have received new homes and belongings thanks to generous donations by a number of organisations.

The Fourways Review wrote about the fire in Seven Diepsloot shacks destroyed by fire [Week ending 7 August], calling for donations to bring relief to the affected families.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) responded to the call made by the Review alongside the Randburg Local and Long Distance Taxi Association and the Diepsloot Churches Forum.

The RTMC donated beds, mattresses, bed linen, blankets, groceries and educational toys for the families with children while the Randburg Local and Long Distance Taxi Association donated building material to build new structures with the support of the Diepsloot Residents Association. The Diepsloot Churches Forum also donated much-needed vouchers for the families.

Head of marketing and communications at RTMC Zoleka Mbuli said, “The next pressing project is to tackle the rampant crime and gender-based violence on women and young girls.”

Mbuli said, “The mandate of the RTMC is to promote safe roads for all in South Africa, however through our CSR [Corporate Social Responsibility] programmes, the corporation responds to the needs of our communities. This act of giving back to the community of Diepsloot will leave a lasting positive impact and unites the Diepsloot community as one society and family.”

Secretary of the Diepsloot Residents Association Akim Zulu acknowledged the donations from the various organisations.

“We have partnered with the above companies for the betterment of the people of Diepsloot,” said Zulu.
