ICYMI: Women’s shelter donates sanitary towels to Diepsloot learners in need

DIEPSLOOT–The founder of Green Door Women's Shelter, Brown Lekekela said most of the learners who received sanitary towels and toiletries were from poor families.

Local non-profit organisation, Green Door Women’s Shelter is ensuring that no girl-child skips classes at school because she lacks sanitary towels during her menstruation period.

To this end, the organisation donated hundreds of sanitary towels and other essentials to learners of Reshomile Primary School.

Green Door Women’s Shelter is a facility that provides a safe shelter and support to victims of rape, domestic violence, gender-based violence and sexual assault in and around the Diepsloot area.

The founder of the facility and gender-based violence activist, Brown Lekekela said, “We donated hundreds of sanitary towels to learners in Reshomile Primary School. Most of these girls are from poor families. Sometimes they are forced to skip classes for days because they do not have sanitary towels.

“With the help of some community members, we were able to get donations to help these learners. It pains me so much to see a child unable to attend school because she lacks something.”

Lekekela appealed to the business community, government institutions and other organisations to help those in need by donating non-perishable goods, sanitary towels, toiletries, clothing, and cash donations to buy items they needed for the shelter.
