Gail Koeberg empowers women in Magaliessig
MAGALIESSIG – Gail Koeberg's centre provides a safe haven for destitute/abused women, children and men with the goal of rehabilitation and restoration.
Covid-19 has seen a lot of people lose their jobs and unable to continue supporting their loved ones.
One woman in Magaliessig, Fourways, Gail Koeberg has become a ray of sunshine for people who need it the most. She is doing good for others even during these trying times.
According to manager of Clover Mama Afrika, Elain Vlok, Koeberg joined Clover Mama Afrika in October 2018 and runs the Quegal Restoration and Refuge Centre in Magaliessig. Collectively she and her team care for 30 children, women and elderly.
“Clover Mama Afrika is Clover’s corporate sustainability initiative which aims to empower women in communities across the nation with various vital skills such as cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, business management, and food gardening. Over and above the training sessions, these ‘Mamas’ are all supplied with the necessary tools, equipment and infrastructure to create an income for themselves in order for them to give back to their communities,” said Vlok.
“I was inspired to start the centre as a result of my personal experiences with abuse as a young child. For me, this centre is a way for me to give back to the community by providing abused and vulnerable women, men and children with a safe place to seek refuge,” said Mama Gail Koeberg.
Vlok said Koeberg had more than 19 years of experience in working with community empowerment projects. Her centre provides a safe haven for destitute/abused women, children and men with the goal of rehabilitation and restoration. This results in individuals being integrated back into society as contributors after they have completed practical skills training.
‘Koeberg already possesses skills such as counselling, administration, training, cooking, baking and knitting. During 2020, she challenged herself to a new skill and started sewing and confirmed that this is an additional good skill to have for her and the ladies that come into her centre,” added Vlok.
