Diepsloot police arrested a 29-year-old man in Ext 10 for the alleged theft of a transformer in the early hours of 18 October.
Spokesperson of Diepsloot Police Station, Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said crime prevention members were on their routine patrol when they received information regarding suspects seen by community members allegedly stealing a transformer.
“The suspects’ vehicle description was given and the search ensued,” he added.
“The vehicle, a white Mitsubishi bakkie with a trailer and transformer on, was eventually spotted along the R511 next to Diepsloot Police Station.
“The police attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspects allegedly sped off,” he said.
A high speed chase ensued and the West Rand Flying Squad provided the officers with back up.
Mathebula said members of the West Rand Flying Squad managed to catch up with the vehicle along the R512 next to the Thabo Mbeki squatter camp. He added, “The members attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspects allegedly continued driving and bumped the state vehicle while trying to evade the police.
“Members allegedly fired a warning shot. One suspect made off on foot and the second suspect, who was the driver, was arrested and charged with theft.”
The suspect is due to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
