Propaganda Arts non-profit organisation nurtures Diepsloot women

DIEPSLOOT– The former learner at Kwena Molapo Secondary School and current creative arts teacher at Sibikwa Arts Academy said it was art, through drama that helped her to become a fearless and strong woman she is today.

A 28-year-old entertainment entrepreneur and performer has embarked on a mission to empower young women in Diepsloot through art and drama.

Lerato Mofokeng is the founder and chairperson of Propaganda Arts non-profit organisation.

Mafokeng, who is the current creative arts teacher at Sibikwa Arts Academy, said it was art through drama that helped her to become the fearless and strong young woman she is today. “At the age of 13, I joined a school drama class where I fell in love with the potential of the woman I would become in future. As shy as I was when I grew up, I found strength and fierceness in art as a form of expressing myself. Participating in art changed my perspectives of the world and its possibilities,” she said.

“As young women, we grow up and live in a society where women are taught to conform, to limit themselves and expected to be perfect. Our society does not allow girls to be comfortable with their loudness because that is regarded as something that can threaten men.

“Our aim is to build and nurture strong women who love and believe in themselves. We become women who know what they want to be without external voices dictating their journey.”

Mofokeng urged young girls from the age of 15 years who want to be part of 2021 classes to come and register.

“We conduct our classes every week in Diepsloot in the community halls of Ext 2 and Ext 7. We make a schedule that allows participants who are usually school learners, to find time to attend.”
