Diepsloot police grateful for community’s participation in fighting crime
DIEPSLOOT – Local police are grateful for the assistance from the community in helping make Diepsloot a safer place to live.
With 2020 coming to a close, Diepsloot Police Station sent out a message of thanks to the community for their continuous assistance and participation in the fight against crime.
Station spokesperson, Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said it is heart-warming to see the active role community members play in attaining safety. “This community has been in the forefront throughout the year in the fight against crime, by means of providing the police with information regarding criminal activities in the community,” he said.
Mathebula said a number of illegal firearms were recovered this year thanks to tip-offs received from community members which further emphasises the importance of community participation in the fight against crime.
“Contact crimes – which include murder, attempted murder, robbery, sexual offences and assaults – continue to be stubborn. Plans and strategies are being developed to reduce these crimes in Diepsloot.
“The Social Crime Prevention Unit is proactively involved in creating awareness through community engagements. During these engagements, safety tips are communicated as a way of trying to reduce contact crimes in the community.”
Mathebula added, “It is clear that we are nowhere closer to where we would like to be in terms of reducing contact crimes in this community. We are, however, pleased and encouraged by active community participation in the fight against crime and this makes us hopeful that we will win this fight.”
“We are working hard to maintain our collaboration with the community as we strive towards creating a safe South Africa.”
The community is urged to continue using the various platforms available to report crime. They can be reported anonymously on the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or on the My SAPS app, which is can be downloaded on any smartphone, to send tip-offs.
