Level 4 lockdown poses new challenges

JOBURG – As South Africans began to grapple with an extended lockdown, there were a number of new challenges communities faced.

Five weeks of lockdown highlighted many inadequacies in our country.

Millions of South Africans suddenly were unable to work and pay for even the most basic of necessities, such as food and face masks.

In a letter to the public on 20 April, shortly after the extension was announced, Ramaphosa said, “Our lockdown has revealed a very sad fault line in our society that reveals how grinding poverty, inequality and unemployment is tearing the fabric of our communities apart.”

Caxton Local Media, like many other businesses, was also hit hard by the global pandemic.

On 20 April, managing director of Caxton Local Media and Commercial Printing, Jaco Koekemoer, announced that the printing of newspapers would only continue in certain areas of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. Gauteng newspapers such as Fourways Review and Midrand Reporter would temporarily stop printing.

This would be the first time in Fourways Review’s 14-year history that printing would stop abruptly in the middle of the year.

With the start of Level 4 lockdown on 1 May, Caxton Local Media resumed printing newspapers and the local news was once again delivered to our readers’ doorsteps.

As many people struggled to adjust to a life with continued restrictions, Fourways Review continued to provide relevant and local news to assist in guiding our readers through this challenging time.
