Daily Bread aims to give others a slice of hope
FOURWAYS –McGinley added that the organisation will soon provide skills development to recipients and community members in areas where they provide their services.
Local non-profit organisation Daily Bread, which is based at Leaping Frog Shopping Centre in Fourways, said it was thankful for the support it had received from community members and local schools to feed the poor.
According to the founder and chairperson of the organisation Charmaine McGinley, their weekend sandwich initiative, aimed at feeding the needy in different parts of regions E and A, has reached thousands of hungry people. “The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic has left many people jobless and some unable to feed their families,” she said.
“We’ve been doing this work to feed people for more than 10 years now in Alexandra, Msawawa informal settlement and Kya Sands.”
She added that following the outbreak of coronavirus, the number of people they were feeding had doubled and they have managed to feed at least 800 people every week. “The newly adjusted Level 3 restrictions have added pressure to people who were hoping to escape joblessness. Our work has grown stronger because of great support we received from Fourways community members and local business people.”
McGinley said the organisation would soon provide skills development programmes to community members in areas where they provided their services. “We’ve realised that giving people food alone will not help them escape the trap of poverty and joblessness. Daily Bread will start a skills development programme centre to empower our people in a few weeks to come. We want to teach them how to cook, bake and do gardening to support themselves and their families.
“Skills provision can be a lasting solution to many social problems and we hope by providing them thy can help others as well.”
