Members pay tribute to fallen heroes on National Police Day

SANDTON – The candle of remembrance was lit by Sandton police Constable Refilwe Mosipi who simultaneously commemorated 10 years of service with the police force.

Officers at the Sandton Police Station commemorated National Police Day (27 January) with a prayer session.

According to National Police Commissioner of the South African Police Service General Khehla Sitole, this important day on the police calendar is an opportunity to highlight the achievements of the policing community all while taking a moment to remember those heroes and heroines who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“It is a day to remember the sacrifices the men and women in blue make daily in their quest to ensure a safe and secure South Africa. [It is] a day to reflect on the significance and meaning of the policing profession and its important role in society,” he said.

Officers at the Sandton Police Station honoured its officers and the community at large. “[Officers] lit a candle for all those people who have been affected or infected by the coronavirus and those who have passed on within the police organisation,” said the station spokesperson Captain Bheki Xulu.

The candle of remembrance was lit by Sandton police Constable Refilwe Mosipi who simultaneously commemorated 10 years of service with the police force. Xulu added that the officers also paid their respects to the victims and families affected by gender-based violence during the small candle-lighting ceremony.

The commissioner added, “We sincerely thank you for working tirelessly day and night, at times facing great danger and threats to your lives, to maintain public order and a crime-free society. “While most people enjoy the relative security and comfort of their homes, you brave all kinds of danger to ensure all are and feel safe.

“Although being a police official is dangerous and thankless work, you are driven by a calling and you deserve our gratitude. You are the heartbeat of the organisation, and our most valuable asset in the fight against criminality and the protection of communities.”
