Public is warned of hotspots

WITKOPPEN – Police are urging motorists to remain cautious and vigilant whenever driving in car hijacking hotspot areas.

Police have warned motorists of hijacking hotspots in the Fourways area.

Spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, Captain Bheki Xulu said criminals continued to target specific areas although the police’s efforts to trace and arrest hijacking suspects in the past months had been respectable.

He added that the corner of Rivonia and Witkoppen roads had become a hotspot for hijackings in recent months as three reported incidents have occurred there.

Xulu said there was not a specific type or model of car targeted. “All of them took place during the day between 9am and 1pm, the [most common] days are Wednesdays and Thursdays.”

Another area on the police’s radar for hijackings is the Woodmead Drive and Buccleuch Interchange. Incidents have reportedly taken place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1pm and 9pm.

He concluded, “Members of the public are being sensitised that they must be always vigilant when approaching or stopping at the mentioned spots or any other, mainly at traffic lights, interchanges and stops.”
