Another bump in the road for community
MIDRAND – Carlswald View residents said they were worried about the safety of pedestrians and other motorists after witnessing multiple accidents due to reckless driving on Eighth Street.
Residents in Carlswald have expressed their frustrations about the process to have speed humps installed along Eighth Street.
As reported in Speed woes in Carlswald [Week ending 19 February], Carlswald View residents said they were worried about the safety of pedestrians and other motorists after witnessing multiple accidents due to reckless driving on Eighth Street.
On 9 February, Kele Mafa, the public relations and stakeholder engagement officer for Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) explained that to request speed humps or traffic calming measures on a road, community members would need to complete a petition and submit it to the Speaker’s Office.
“The petition will be registered with a reference number and allocated to the relevant department. If it is allocated to the JRA, our traffic engineers will assess the road to determine if it needs calming measures, and the type of calming measures required,” said Mafa.
Adeesh Bhogal, a Carlswald View resident who has been spearheading the process on behalf of other residents, said all the required documents and petitions had been sent to the Speaker’s Office but, as of 1 March, he had received no feedback. Bhogal said it was his fifth attempt trying to get feedback about the process.
Spokesperson for the Speaker’s Office Sipho Masigo said once the petitions were submitted, a letter or email of receipt would be sent to the community. “The issue is then sent to the entity or department that should carry out and implement it,” he said.
Masigo concluded that the duration of the whole process would depend on the relocation of budgets by JRA, “Once the information is passed on to JRA, they must reallocate the budget. “It is difficult to mention dates as to when this will take place.”
