Service delivery project hits Diepsloot
DIEPSLOOT – A number of service delivery issues were tended to in the recently launched 120 Days of Accelerated Service Delivery campaign by executive mayor, Geoff Makhubo.
The 120 Days of Accelerated Service Delivery kicked off its Diepsloot leg on 10 May.
This leg of the project will take place in wards 113 and 95.
Executive Mayor Geoff Makhubo announced in February that the project would begin in Region A, which includes Fourways and Midrand.
According to Region A citizen relationship assistant manager, Pierre Nel, the objectives of the programme are to:
• Profile basic service delivery challenges in the regions
• Inform regional development and maintenance priorities by different departments and entities
• Coordinate integrated and multi-disciplinary operations for more effectiveness and impact on the ground
• Ensure the programme is people-centred and driven by local governance, planning and delivery.
Nel said a number of municipal departments are taking part in the 120 Days of Accelerated Service Delivery campaign, which took place in Diepsloot until 14 May. “The working teams of JRA, Johannesburg Water, City Power and Pikitup will be fixing potholes, clearing kerb inlets, fixing water leaks, removing illegal dumping and attending to faulty streetlights and mini substations,” he said.
“On Monday [10 May] only, Johannesburg Roads Agency did patching and resurfacing on Chief Langalibalele Street through Ingonyama Street and William Nicol Drive, Rivers of Babylon Street and Tlou Street. They also did road painting along Ingonyama Street and unblocked kerb inlets at JB Marx and Inyoni roads.”
Spokesperson for City Power, Isaac Mangena said there has been a spike in the number of illegal connections in the area after conducting connection cut-offs as part of the campaign.
“The area is starting to see an increase in illegal connections including from the street lights, which leads to overloading of the network and frequent outages. Tons of cables used for illegal connections have also been recovered,” he said.
“The teams also embarked on fixing of streetlights, changing bulb fittings, covers to ensure the lights function at night. We urge the community to report any illegality happening around our infrastructure including streetlights.”
The next area of focus for the campaign is Kya Sands from 17 May.
