Resident is on a mission to help rabbits
NORSCOT– Larsen urged community members and local business to help them raise funds to sterilise more than 20 rabbits that have been caught so far.
Norscot resident Kim Larsen and Berario Bunnies non-profit organisation have embarked on a mission to raise funds in order to help sterilise neglected rabbits roaming the streets of the neighbourhood.
Larsen alleged that the rabbits escaped from one of the properties in Norscot which she believes belongs to DBM Architects. “For some months we have had a growing rabbit population in the area, the rabbits did not belong to any residents.
“There has been extensive damage to a number of gardens, in addition to some rabbits being killed by vehicles. It became clear that intervention was required before the population grew out of control. I partnered with an NPO who has the equipment and experience on how to catch the rabbits.
“While searching and catching the rabbits we found the source of the problem…DBM Architects refused to take responsibility and help solving the problem caused by their employee.”
However, the CEO of DBM Architects, Wynand du Plessis said, “The property in question does not belong to us and it is not a business property nor used by our business in any way.
“Edward Makgoba, who happens to be our driver, stays there by arrangement with the owners. Edward decided, entirely of his own accord and without notification or permission from the owners, to get two rabbits as pets for his children who occasionally visit him.
“It is alleged that these two rabbits bred and spread into the area. I have undertaken to assist Edward financially so that he can contribute to the costs the community incurred up to this point.
“He has assured me that he will try to capture any rabbits that may still be on the loose as far as he can.”
DBM employee Edward Makgoba confirmed that he had kept a number of rabbits on the property as pets for his children. “I have no bunnies kept in the property anymore. I had around 14 bunnies bred from the two that I bought as pets for my children. I gave them all to a group of people who came here looking for them. My boss said he will help me with financial assistance to contribute towards sterilising those that were caught.”
