Fourways author hopes to inspire youngsters and raise mental health awareness through her book
DAINFERN – Jess said she hopes to inspire other teenagers and young adults to speak up about their struggles and also reach parents who might have children experiencing anxiety and depression challenges.
A 14-year-old Fourways-based author, singer, songwriter and pianist, launched her first book titled A Few Slivers of Light at Dainfern Golf Estate on 3 June.
Jess Robus is a mental health advocate and Grade 10 learner at HeronBridge College. She hopes to inspire other teenagers and young adults to speak about their struggles and also reach parents who might have children experiencing anxiety and depression challenges.
“My book that we are launching today is a collection of poems. I’ve always loved writing, poetry in particular, I’ve found it to be a very engaging medium from both the perspective of the reader and the writer. It’s an art form that can so eloquently capture emotions and thoughts and enables me to deal with them and process them constructively,” Jess said.

“Publishing this book is a way for me to share my struggles and recovery and hopefully show others that they are not alone. I’m so excited that my poetry is now out in the world and people will have an opportunity to read it.”
Award-winning author and poet, Raashida Khan, who wrote the foreword of the book, said it is not just a collection of beautiful and evocative poetry but a revelation to the reader.
“It is a revelation – an insight into the psyche of a young woman walking her journey of life while dealing with her challenges, both internal and external. Jess displays insight and talent that is beyond her age. Her writing journey mirrors her personal journey so that, as readers, we are drawn in and are captured by the turn of phrase, use of words, and interesting take on writing style,” Khan said.
Jess implored people to read her book and support people suffering from mental health-related illnesses.
