Green Door Women’s Shelter hosts workshop on gender-based violence

DIEPSLOOT– Lekekela added that the organisation will host a series of education campaigns to raise awareness on the scourge this year.

A Diepsloot-based non-profit organisation that provides a safe shelter and support for victims of rape, domestic violence or sexual assault, hosted a gender-based violence workshop on 29 May.

The founder of Green Door Women’s Shelter, Brown Lekekela, said the workshop was aimed at sensitising the issue of gender-based violence among community members and equip women who often fell victim to the scourge with the necessary information.

“As an organisation that offers help to victims of gender-based violence in the community, we have a responsibility to teach community members about the scourge of gender-based violence.

“Today we hosted a workshop to teach and help women about what they can do if they find themselves in abusive relationships. We want them to know where to go, what to do to find help and what steps they can take in order to report cases of gender-based violence.”

He added that the organisation would host a series of education campaigns to raise awareness about the issue this year. “Our country has become a hotspot of gender-based violence and if nothing is done, people will continue to lose their lives at the hands of those who claim to love them.”
