SUNNINGHILL– Mabunda said the offender was attended to by the medical doctor who confirmed that the pains were not caused by circumcision.

The Department of Correctional Services in Gauteng said all offenders would receive medical care when necessary.
The department made the statement following claims that an inmate at Leewkop Correctional Centre was allegedly suffering from a botched circumcision. The claim was made by a fellow inmate, according to News 24.
According to the department, the offender continues to receive medical attention at [Leeuwkop Correctional] Centre or at government facilities when the need arises.
The News 24 report said the inmate underwent surgery for the circumcision in 2019.
Gauteng regional communications coordinator in the Department of Correctional Services, Zandile Mabunda said the offender was attended to by a medical doctor who confirmed that the pain he was suffering was not caused by circumcision.
In a statement provided to the Fourways Review, Mabunda said, “The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) incarcerates inmates in a humane and secure environment. All inmates have access to healthcare.
“The offender was indeed circumcised in 2019. The offender raised a concern about pains and he was attended to by the medical doctor who confirmed that the pains were not caused by circumcision, but by other complications that cannot be disclosed because of patient confidentiality.”
The initial report claimed that the patient had allegedly been offered ‘hush money’ to stop raising his concerns.
Mabunda said the department was not aware of allegations that the offender was offered a R2 000 bribe. “Allegations of bribery must be reported, and once reported, an investigation will be
initiated that will determine the further course of action,” said Mabunda.
