Scarves keep the chill at bay
DIEPSLOOT – Donated scarves were handed out to community members in various Diepsloot extensions in the spirit of Mandela Day.
Residents in Diepsloot will be kept a little warmer this winter thanks to the Mandela Day drive of the Diepsloot Residents Association.
The Diepsloot Residents Association (DRA), alongside the Steyn City Foundation and Wot-If Trust, took to the streets of Diepsloot in Ext 2, 7 and 9 on July 18 to hand out scarves donated by the foundation and trust.

Hellen Setunu, operations manager at the Wot-If Trust said the community was really happy to receive the scarves. “We’ve worked with the Diepsloot Residents Association before for other projects, but this was our first time working with them for Mandela Day, so I think it went really well,” she said.
“We came with the initiative of hanging them on the trees, but as we were busy working along the street, we handed out the scarves to residents by their houses and people were passing by.”
Secretary for the resident’s association, Akim Zulu said over 250 scarves were handed over to Diepsloot residents. “The DRA has programmes for all public holidays, including Mandela Day. We usually work with the Wot-If Trust, so today was a big success,” he said.

Setunu said most people were happy that something was being done in the community and did not even realise that July 18 was a special day. “Most of the people in the extensions did not have much to anything set-up, so it was nice to know they were happy to see us there,” she concluded.
Zulu concluded that they are looking forward to the next upcoming holidays such as Africa Day and Heritage Day as they plan to help the community with projects again.
