Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said a working relationship between police and community members had started to yield results.
This was after two community tip-offs led to the arrests of two male suspects between the ages of 29 and 41 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on April 21.
Mathebula said police were conducting patrols when they received a tip-off from a community member about a man who was suspected to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Ext 6.
“Members acted swiftly and proceeded to the suspect’s address. On arrival, a search was conducted and a firearm loaded with ammunition was allegedly found hidden under a mattress. When they asked the suspect to produce a licence for possessing a firearm, the suspect failed to do so and was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
Mathebula said the other suspect was arrested after the police received another tip-off about a man in Ext 4 who was alleged to be in possession of an illegal firearm.
“The second suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition after he had failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm in Ext 4.”
He said both suspects were due to appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court on April 25.
