Lonehill resident creates award-winning gin brand

The Pineslope local created a gin that won multiple awards in 2020.

Pineslope resident Rachel Smith started her own gin brand called Smiths Gin in 2019.

After working in the alcohol industry for eight years, she started the company alone and currently runs it by herself. “I wanted to try my hand at creating and managing my own brand from scratch– that was fun, adventurous and creative,” she said.

Smith said that the most fun about her journey is being able to collaborate with other businesses and pushing to make the unknown happen. Her gin has won multiple awards at the SA Craft Gin Awards in 2020. “That gave me a sense of relief knowing I’ve got a great brand and product as well as the confidence to carry on with this journey.”

She added that the exponential learning curve she has been on is the best part of the journey.

The young businesswoman says that her boyfriend and dad have been her biggest support system throughout her journey. “It’s a lonely journey running your own business and you need that soundboard and hug when things don’t work out to encourage you to carry on.”

Her company does not only sell gin, it also sells clothing with the same colourful and creative patterns as the bottles.

Smith hopes to one day be a global brand and extend into other fun products and services. She would also like to have her story be an inspiration to many other people who are thinking about starting their own business with limited resources.
