Dainfern Knitwits display blankets in Fourways

Dainfern Knitwits knitting group are making a quick stitch to reach their goal of 6 700 blankets in time for July 18.

An avid group of knitters from Dainfern displayed their blankets at Fourways Mall on June 10 in line with the group’s 6 700 Blankets Challenge.

Dainfern resident Colleen Teklenburg formed the Dainfern Knitwits after the founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn, asked her to be an ambassador in 2020. The Knitwits, and partners ABSA and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, have a goal to reach a target of 6 700 blankets by July 18 for Nelson Mandela Day. The blankets will be displayed at Fourways Mall on the day.

Teklenburg said, “We have had an overwhelming response from the people passing by [the blanket display] asking how they can get involved. From the blanket stand, we have recruited quite a few ladies to knit and crochet who have passed by the stand and they have joined the Dainfern Knitwits.

“I am so extremely proud of all the ladies that have made such a significant contribution to making the most exquisite blankets with their own two hands, to keep people in need warm in the winter months. We have become a blanket family by knitting our nation together,” she told Fourways Review.

“We will be holding a Public Knitathon at Dainfern Clubhouse on Monday, July 18 in honour of our beloved Nelson Mandela on his birthday from 10:00–13:00. Everyone is so welcome to join to make a difference in our communities in need by a simple thread of wool and a hook.”
