Volunteering brings valuable lessons for young Dainfern local
Assisting with local NPO Dainfern Connect, a Dainfern resident shares her hopes to continue helping others.
A Dainfern resident has taken valuable lessons from being involved in a local organisation’s events in the community.
Ashyla Matekaire, a learner of British International College volunteered at non-profit organisation Dainfern Connect after searching for organisations to garner community service hours, and chose the organisation after being presented three options.
“Myself and some others got involved because we found that if we were in the same position, we would want people to help us and also want to share with others,” she said.
“I do enjoy volunteering as well because it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. I feel like helping others in need is not just a good deed, it’s a way of showing your appreciation to the whole world.”
Dainfern Connect was founded in March this year by residents and psychologists who were concerned at the high levels of stress being experienced by adolescents.
They aim to provide youngsters and their families with peace of mind by equipping them with the tools to enhance mental health and thrive in these challenging times. Also, to repress the rising levels of depression and prevent suicides in the community.
Looking to the future, Ashyla who was born in Zimbabwe said, “I want to be a paediatric surgeon, a CEO of an NGO or start a hospital for children in Zimbabwe whose parents cannot afford hospital care.”
