Two patrolling officials from the Leeuwkop Emergency Support Team Unit (EST), Lebohang Motoari and Stuart Martin, successfully interrupted an attempted car theft by five suspects in the Leeuwkop official residential area. Their prompt response led to a positive outcome, although none of the perpetrators were apprehended.
The incident occurred late at night when residents of the Leeuwkop medium B Married Quarters area reported hearing unusual noises. Upon receiving the alert, Motoari and Martin immediately rushed to the scene, where they discovered a group of individuals attempting to steal a parked car.

Upon arrival, they noticed two civilians acting suspiciously next to the perimeter fence. This prompted a response, and the civilians fled on foot, leading to a chase. Two jigsaws were found near the perimeter fence, but unfortunately, none of the civilians were apprehended.
Responding to their instincts, the EST officials continued patrolling further down the road, with one on foot and one in the patrol car. They spotted three civilians moving around in a yard belonging to one of the residents. When the civilians noticed the patrol car, they fled and a chase ensued, including the firing of a warning shot. The suspected perpetrators managed to escape.
A bag found not far from the yard contained several items, including a set of Allen keys and two VW computer boxes. It is suspected that these items were intended for stealing the vehicle parked in the yard where the suspects were spotted. This incident is believed to be connected to a previous unfortunate event where one of the officials’ private vehicles was stolen on the premises a few months ago.

Bafana Mashego, the Acting Area Commissioner at the time of the incident, commended all the officials involved, including those who were off duty and alerted the patrolling officers. He echoed the sentiments recently shared by Gauteng Regional Commissioner, Adv. Moeketsi Mashibini, emphasises the importance of sharing such heroic acts by officials and making it known to criminals that their activities will not be tolerated within their jurisdiction.
Motoari and Martin acted swiftly, alerting the suspects to their presence, and causing them to flee the scene. Despite their best efforts, the officials were unable to apprehend any of the suspects, who managed to escape into the night.
The prompt response from Motoari and Martin serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant patrolling in residential areas. Their proactive approach to the situation prevented the car theft from being successful and ensured the safety of the local residents.
