Man caught in the act of stealing power cables

Ward 115 councillor Mark van de Merwe said he was over the moon by the arrest.

A man suspected of stealing cables, had his tools ready but just when he was about to get busy, he was caught red-handed on November 12 at Waterford Estate in Fourways.

This was music to the ears of Ward 115 councillor Mark van de Merwe who told us what happened.
“The estate has been hit by cable thefts two times in the past weeks,” he said.
“So, they decided to deploy their security and caught two people stripping cables. The suspects fled the scene but were chased by the security which led to one man being apprehended just behind a substation in Kya Sands. He was then detained, and City Power risk control was called as well as the police.

“I am so happy about this. I had a day off yesterday but when I learnt about this, it was fantastic news to me. The community has reacted with so much excitement to this because it has been an ongoing issue in the area. We have had about 10 cable theft incidents in the last month, so it is a very problematic issue, but I have various initiatives to assist which are still underway, and I cannot disclose them at the moment.”

He said his proposed initiatives were approved by City Power risk control at a meeting on November 8.
“This was an initiative by Delta Blue Security. They patrol the area and are the ones who chased and caught the one guy. I just want to express my gratitude to Jean, Justin and their dedicated team that has gone above and beyond their mandate to assist in patrolling the infrastructure for all of us in Ward 115.
“On behalf of the community, a huge thank you to Delta Blue Security and Waterford Estate.”
