Gloves are off as boxer makes history

Kevin Lerena has made himself proud by winning a coveted title while legendary boxer Lennox Lewis watched the fight.

Fourways boxer Kevin Lerena battled to hide his excitement after he walked away with the WBC Interim Bridgerweight world title on November 25, at Emperors Palace.

However, this was not just any other win – it was also one that saw him joining veteran boxers like Dingaan ‘The Rose of Soweto’ Thobela and Thulani ‘Sugar Boy’ Malinga in the history records of owning the title.

“I feel ecstatic. I am only the third South African to hold the WBC world title, so I have made history and I’m so proud. There are big things to come now but it’s important for me to just keep winning. We have a big 2024 planned and we are possibly looking to fight in the Middle East. I’ll have to wait and see what offers come my way,” he said to Fourways Review.

The local southpaw is now a two-weight division world champion. Despite being a scrappy contest, Lerena showed discipline and determination to score as many points as possible for his victory.

Lerena was up against a seasoned boxer – German-based Albanian, Senad Gashi. While at it, he added another title to his list of accomplishments.

The legendary Lennox Lewis from the United Kingdom, who is known for being the last heavyweight to hold the undisputed championship, was also at the Emperor Palace to watch Lerena as he strutted his stuff in the boxing ring. Locals were excited over his presence.

Lerena scored a unanimous points victory over Gashi in the headline bout of the Double Down@The Palace Box and Dine Tournament.
