Montecasino Classico race won by 19-year-old

Emile van Niekerk was the first person to finish the race at 08:27.

A total of 2000 cyclists embarked on the Montecasino Classico Race on February 11. Amongst them was 19-year-old Emile van Niekerk who embarked on the 90km race with passion and was the first to finish the race. He said it took a lot of preparation and practice. “It was really hard, but I am so happy for this victory. I was representing TEG and their support is what got me to the finish line,” he said.

Supporters came out and cheered on their loved ones. “I came with my sisters from Swaziland to support members of our club, Team G cycling club. We know this will help them get to the finish line. It is of utmost importance for them to know that we are behind them every step of the way,” said Sethabile Gulwako. When their club members approached the finish line, they cheered showing them how proud they were of them.

In the third edition of the Montecasino Classico and ride 90km, Rohan Du Plooy obtained second place while Bradley Scott earned third place. Johnny Koen said he is proud of all the cyclists that participated in the event. “90km is not easy, but they persevered and made it to the finish line. I am happy that cyclists find joy in reaching the finish line.”

With a close eye from the JMPD and Douglasdale SAPS, the whole event was a success. The event started at 06:30 and by 08:27 the first man went over the finish line.
