Learners enjoy swim-a-thon for charity

The learners were excited and wanted to swim even more for charity.

The annual swim-a-thon has commenced and the weather agreed. Learners of the school are swimming long distances for a charity organisation Singakwenza. The event is supported by the whole school and each child is sponsored per width they have swam. The more they swim the higher the donation. Grade 7 learner, Cayden Ireland said the event was so much fun all he wanted to do was swim extra lengths just to contribute more to the charity.

Singakwena is an NPO providing early childhood education to economically disadvantaged communities. Another grade 7 learner Robbie Cassel-Ross was happy that the money is being given to charity. “It was very sporty and knowing that you are swimming for charity makes you go even further. I honestly love the rewards we received at the end.”

The client experience officer of the school, Louise Mathers said the moms of the learners taking part in the swim-a-thon were very supportive. “Our wonderful and most supportive mom’s prepared hot dogs and had crisps and lollipops ready for a boost of energy for the finishers. These moms have been involved in this event every day for eight days, which is most commendable.”

She said this charitable event has taught the young students the act of generosity and the importance of charity. “This will empower them to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. Engaging in charitable acts can also have a positive influence on children and help them develop many valuable life skills and morals.”

The five main reasons the school teaches the children about the importance of giving back is the gift of nurturing and showing compassion, instilling positive character traits, helping them connect with one’s community, boosting and elevating self-esteem coupled with gratitude. “Besides encouraging their mental positivity towards giving, this initiative certainly got our incredible Crawfordians outdoors and that is of course what summer days are for,” said Mathers.
