Coach helps learners emerge from their shells on the field

Learners go from shy and afraid to proud and excited on the field especially after they have scored a goal.

As a way of encouraging young ones to enjoy the outdoors, Edustreams Vocational High School learners enjoyed a sports day with their coach who frequently visits them to help them come out of their shells.

Coach Raquel Barbosa said being outdoors has different benefits for the children. “By being outdoors and participating in sports, they gain physical health benefits such as improved cardiovascular health, enhanced motor skills, and increased strength and endurance. She said outdoor activities promote mental well-being by reducing stress levels, improving mood and fostering a sense of connection with nature.

The founder of the school, Wendy Roux said, “The learners are developing teamwork, and communication skills while having fun. It makes me feel elated to see them happy in the outdoors during activities.”

When the learners score, they would go to the corner poles for a victory dance. When Cullan Lynch scored, he ‘did it like Ronaldo’.

Barbosa said, “Since starting with us, learners have shown significant development in their skills. They have become more proficient in their chosen sports, demonstrating better technique, strategy and understanding of the game.” She does have learners who are initially shy or fearful of the outdoors.

“Seeing their faces light up with joy when they achieve their best, overcoming a challenge or simply enjoy being part of a team is incredibly rewarding. I cherish the opportunity to be a positive influence in their lives and to contribute to their development as individuals both on and off the field.”
