The JMPD starts taking action on illegal advertising

They have started removing signs without city stickers on them.

The city has declared war on advertising signs and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) answered and got to work. They started removing illegal signs and all illegal adverts are next. According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the Johannesburg municipality has established specific by-laws to govern outdoor advertising. These regulations encompass a variety of advertising signs, outlining the procedures for their approval, upkeep, and removal. Penalties for non-adherence are also defined.

“No person may erect an advertising sign, or use or continue to use, an advertising sign or any structure or device as an advertising sign without the prior written approval of the City. Unless the sign to be erected has been exempted in terms of section,” said Fihla. “Only posters bearing city stickers, which serve as proof of obtained permission, are legal. All other posters are considered illegal and are subject to removal.”

The JMPD consistently works to remove illegal posters and signage in the city to uphold cleanliness, order, and enforce the city’s by-laws. “If you intend to display a poster or outdoor advertisement, it is advisable to seek advice from a legal professional or directly contact the City’s Development Planning Department to ensure full compliance with the by-law. Failure to comply may lead to penalties.”
